Mashrabiya is Middle Eastern design tradition, where wooden screens are made of small wooden segments. They are typically found as covered window boxes and balconies in cities such as Cairo and Damascus. It is very rare that mashrabiya screens are used for a room divider like this one. One panel has a small hinged window, the other panel has a small covered ledge, copying similar ledges that would normally be used for holding a jug of water (the cooler outside air would keep the water at the right temperature.
This is a very rare antique piece. It’s been lightly restored by a professional.
